2008 : Cinderella

The Story
Once upon a time there was a beautiful young girl named Cinderella. She lived with her ageing father, Baron Hardup, who was kind but weak, her two ugly sisters, Gertrude and Griselda, and her stepmother. Her sisters and stepmother were cruel to Cinderella making her do all the work and never letting her leave the kitchen at Hardup Hall.

At the King’s palace, the King, Prince Rupert and his secretary and best friend, Dandini, are trying to find a girl for the Prince to marry. Not able to decide, they agree to hold a Grand ball inviting all eligible girls to attend. The ugly sisters were very excited and each was sure that they would win the Prince but poor Cinderella could not go as she had no fine clothes to wear.

All alone Cinderella is visited by her Fairy Godmother who declares that she shall go to the Ball. She then waves her magic wand transforming Cinderella’s rags into a beautiful gown. So, Cinderella can go to the Ball after all; she then leaves for the Ball in a grand coach with a warning from the Fairy Godmother that she must leave by midnight.

At the Ball, Cinderella meets the Prince who falls in love with her and they dance together. Suddenly, midnight strikes and Cinderella rushes from the Ball but, in her hurry, she leaves behind a glass slipper. The Prince demands that every woman in the land must try on the slipper until he finds to whom it belongs. After a long search he and Cinderella are reunited and they live happily ever after.

NODA Critique

I must express a personal dislike for scripts that make fun of disabilities such as deafness. I found that this version of Cinderella by Lazy Bee Scripts not only had Baron Hardup suffering from this affliction but also using a wheeled zimmer-frame to aid his mobility.

Knowing that Graham Lees does not need such assistance, and that he had considerable experience in playing successful comedy roles, I felt that it was an unnecessary prop.

That said, the production moved at a good pace with more comedy from the husband and wife team Carol and Simon Crooks as the ugly sisters, Gertrude and Griselda, and bright musical numbers from Helen McDonnell as Cinderella, Rosemary Merry as the Prince and Nicola Dolan as Dandini.

The hard-working Ben Ireson did well as Buttons, especially in his "Elvis" routine with the well-drilled dancers and chorus.

Samantha Moss was delightful as the Fairy Godmother. Alex Burgess was a youthful King Cuthbert and Ruth Carpenter brought light relief to the part of the Prime Minister with a parodied version of the Major-General's song from Pirates.

I felt that Kate Wurcbacher could have been directed to bring more "wickedness" to the character of the Stepmother thereby giving the audience more opportunities to boo.

The well-lit sets were good, the musical accompaniment was spot on and the costumes were bright and cheerful.
